A Typical Risk Management - H&S Proposal

There are four programmes that we operate and the choice is dependent upon the business you undertake, the existing systems, which may already be in place for both Health & Safety and Risk Management  and the extent of the training and ongoing monitoring your require.

You may already use the services of an outside consultancy, be that a large company or an individual you employ directly, possibly full or part time, and our proposals will dove tail but we do not disguise the fact that the programme will enable you to deal with these matters “in-house” and the costs of outside consultancies will reduce or even become unnecessary.

We operate four proposals as follows –

  • Safety Analysis
Our Risk Manager will survey the business and meet with senior management for general discussion.

A confidential written report will be issued giving an unbiased view on present compliance with Health & Safety issues, attitudes towards Risk Management generally and recommendations for you to consider.
  • Safety and Management System (S.A.M.S.)
The SAMS programme is the first step in bringing your Health & Safety team up to the necessary level as regards knowledge and understanding.  The system will show how to plan, undertake and document a full risk assessment programme covering all aspects of your business.
  • “Discovery” or “Direxion”

Designed as a renewable programme of further visits, either on a quarterly or monthly basis, to assist your team in the ongoing activities, i.e. work method statements etc and to generally keep a “hand on the tiller”.

Similar packages but with “Direxion” being designed for the larger organisation and/or more complex risks.

Senior management will receive confidential quarterly reports detailing progress made.

In the following pages, we provide some more information on each proposal should you be interested.

SAFETY ANALYSIS

This is the basic component of all our programmes.  It is an ISO18001 based Health & Safety audit designed to identify the extent and effectiveness of your existing programme.

It is not designed as a pass or fail test nor is it created as heavy handed piece of auditing.  It is a sympathetic, empathetic but impartial observation of the facts.

There will in most cases be two initial visits –

  • Visit 1 -
This will last approximately 3-hours although this will of course vary on the individual circumstances.  If possible, the visit should involve a discussion with the Chief Executive Officer/Managing Director/owner or with at least one member of the Board.  The elements of this visit will include –

An initial questionnaire

A survey of the premises and business and on site if appropriate

Review of existing documentation

  •  Visit 2 -
This visit is the presentation of the findings and the action plan.

The Action Plan will set out reasonable targets for achievement and a timetable.  These will be discussed with you, changes agreed as necessary and a revised Action Plan designed via all parties will then be available.

S.A.M.S.

SAMS is a structured Health & Safety Training programme designed to assist your organisation in meeting its obligations under Health & Safety Legislation.

It is a team based approach which will provide a group of employees (usually up to six) with both the tools and confidence, plan, create and implement a full Health & Safety programme, which would typically include –

  • Driving the Health & Safety programmes throughout your organisation.
  • Creating the Health & Safety policy.
  • Scoping and planning of the Risk Assessment programme.
  • Undertaking all but the most complex risk assessments.
  • Designing and implementing Work Method Statements (Safe Operating Procedures)
  • Identifying training needs within your organisation and constructing appropriate training programmes.

Discovery

This is the basic support package which incorporates the Safety Analysis and the Action Plan.

This package is the next consideration following on from the Safety Analysis and takes SAMS forward.  Whilst the SAMS programme will have built your team to a certain level, Health & Safety and Risk Management issues are ongoing and developing and your team will benefit from two further visits in the second year to monitor progress, give advice as necessary, discuss new legislation and plan ahead.

A confidential written report will be issued to senior management as agreed with you so that you will be aware of exactly where your organisation stands in terms of compliance.  These further visits also avoid the problem of the good works previously achieved grinding to a halt which is a natural problem we can anticipate over a period of time.

Third party unbiased and helpful intervention and monitoring will keep your company on top of these tasks.

Direxion

This is a more intensive version of the Discovery plan designed for large organisation and complex risks.  The number of visits and the number of confidential reports to senior management will be greater, dependent upon your business and your requirements.
