‘Two horses chewed my car!’
4 Apr 2007
Daredevil deer and belligerent bulls were to blame for some of last year’s more bizarre insurance claims, according to Norwich Union.
The insurer this week released a list of quirky claims in which homeowners and motorists were at the mercy of the animal kingdom. In one case, a motorist returned to his car following a country stroll to find two horses had “chewed the car”, according to the claim form submitted.
Another received damage to a windscreen after a deer, seemingly attracted by the yellow tax disc, head-butted it. A deer also featured in a claim for a smashed kitchen window, having dived into it not realising it was closed – the deer survived the incident.
One homeowner was confronted by brawling bulls in his garden. The three escaped beasts destroyed a fence and trellis in the process. A fashion-conscious fox took exception to the footwear of one claimant, who said it had chewed through their sandal at a friend’s barbecue. And even small creatures were named as culprits in come claim forms. A woman taking a pet hamster to the vet found on arrival that the rodent had chewed through a handbag in a desperate bid to escape.
The insurer said that it paid out on all the examples given, despite their quirky nature.
Jason Harris, senior claims manager at Norwich Union, said: “Our annual review of claims shows the weird and wacky incidents that can happen unexpectedly. Whilst some of these claims may cause a smile it is worth remembering that at the time some of the events were probably quite traumatic.”
